My 10 Step Skincare Journey

Monday, May 08, 2017

A lot of you might be thinking, "Wow, that's a lot," "That's more than 10," "Can she maintain it," or "Will that even work?"

Well, we'll see. I just started my journey last April 13 and I'm really hoping it works. As you all know (or maybe those who knew me personally), I've been struggling with hormonal acne and constant breakouts ever since college. I don't know with you but those sleepless nights just to finish my requirements or thesis, accumulated stress, and Taft pollution took a toll on my skin. It's not also helping that a big chunk of it was caused by my genes. So I learned to be patient, to adjust, and just to accept. Yesssss, deep, pero paka-totoo tayo. Minsan acceptance nalang talaga eh. 'Yan ang binigay sa'yo, tanggapin at mahalin mo. It felt like it was a love-hate relationship so you gotta do what you gotta do to please the other. Hey, I take my relationship with my skin seriously.

So of course, I've been through that long search of finding the one. 'Yaaaaan, hirap talaga mahanap ang tama para sa'yo. Ganyan din sa skincare. Trust me, I've tried almost all the brands (popular or new) that overpromise especially in their ads or commercials but hardly deliver. Been there, done that. But I noticed how they don't really tell you what you need, what's right for you, etc.

Good thing a friend of mine introduced me to one of my holy grail items, which is the ROHTO Mentholatum Acnes Medicated Foaming Wash. I never changed my facial wash since then. But that drove me to discover more. I knew that it's not enough to just wash your face. I knew there's more. So I'm so lucky to have visited Japan for the first time in 2013. It's just amazing how they have so many selections and to my amazement, they always have this shelf of products for my skin type. That's when I started trying out different things, from makeup to skincare. But the brand I mentioned is one of my favorites.

Up to now, I've been maintaining my skin using the same line of products until I went to Korea. It was a hit or miss for me. There were days when I'll be pimple-free but there were days when you just want to scrub it off until it was gone but of course, I knew I can't. I could still remember that during my trip in Korea last April, I got my period so hello cystic acne. It was the most outfit and selfie ruining thing you can ever imagine. I swear. So anyway, my sisters and cousins kept talking about the skincare in Korea and on how they will shop at Myeongdong. I was totally clueless. I was only familiar with Japanese skincare and brands. That's about it. There are a lot of Korean brands here in the Philippines but I never bothered checking them out. Truth be told, I was too scared to try anything than my constant. Unlike those who are blessed with normal and good skin, their face can be a canvas of trial and errors but mine was too delicate for that. I breakout easily and it will be difficult for me to recover. So back to our trip, I researched instead. As in A LOT. I searched for the best brands until I ended up discovering Charlotte Cho's Sokoglam. Oh, how I wish they ship abroad. Anyway, then and there I found the 10 step Korean skincare and how it works. I also saw the best products for my skin type (oily, sensitive, and acne prone). They were really that particular. I listed the products I have at home since I stocked up during my last Japan trip then I made a list of items I can check out, test, and add to my cart. It was really a black hole. I binge watched every video they have and read the articles I can digest at night so I can prepare for our visit in Myeongdong (I'll save that story for a different post).

Voila, my skincare routine was created. It's currently a mixture of Japanese and Korean. Old and new. I'm not sure if I'll keep this combo or change it up a bit, we'll see, but for now I'll stick to these. I think 10 items are Japanese since I have to finish them first then the 3 items are Korean (2 are samples). Here we go:

1. BANILA CO. Clean It Zero Purity (oil-based cleanser)
I love this. I swear by it. It melts everything and helps clear your skin.

2. MENTHOLATUM ACNES Medicated Foaming Wash (water-based cleanser)
Constant. One of my HGs.

3. ETTU SAIS Peeling Milk (exfoliator)
One of my HGs also. Very gentle to the skin and will leave it plump as a baby.

BCL TSURURI Point Clay Pack (pore mask)
I use this whenever I feel like my pores need cleaning.

4. ROHTO MENTHOLATUM ACNES Medicated Powder Lotion Toner with Acno (toner)
It's soothing, feels cool on my skin, and it really cleans and heals your acne.

5. BANILA CO. White Wedding Sleeping Essence (essence)
Okay, I actually made a mistake here, that's why now I'm using it alternately with another product. Plus, it's just a sample so I'm nearly done with it. But so far, it's really nice on the face. It gives you the right glow.

6. IT'S SKIN Power 10 Formula VB Effector with Vitamin B6 (serum)
It's thicker than the normal essence and this is good for those who have sensitive skin like me.

7. LULULUN Precious Red Rich Moisturizing Face Mask (sheet mask)
This one, too! I thought it was good for a year. The number 365 was misleading only to find out there were only 32 sheet masks inside. So I've read. XD

8. COUNTRY & STREAM JAPAN Honey Eye Roll-on (eye cream)
Since it's summer here, I decided to use this instead of my Avon eye creams. Its consistency is not that thick and not that heavy on your face.

9. HADA LABO Gokujyun Super Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Lotion (moisturizer)
It has a watery appearance but has a light hydrating texture which I really like.

10. BIORÉ UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence sunscreen (sunscreen/sun block)
Powder finish, very light on the face, need I say more?

ROHTO Mentholatum Acnes Acne Prevention Clear Gel
It's my go-to product when I have active pimples. Really effective.

AVANCÉ Lash Serum EX
The cure to my lack of brows.

ROHTO CHU LIP Disney Tsum Tsum Lip Balm
Sweet and cute balm to hydrate your lips.

That's basically how my routine started. In the weeks I've been loyally using these, I noticed and believe that my skin is better now more than ever. It's definitely hydrated, softer, and smoother. Though I still do have blemishes, a few bumps there, and big pores, but I'm crossing my fingers that they'll eventually disappear or it won't be as frustrating as before.

I hope I can document this journey but I'll definitely post my product reviews soon!

Love lots, xx
